BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's basketball team (10-4, 1-2 MAC) dropped a hard-fought contest against preseason MAC favorite Ohio, 76-65, at Alumni Arena on Saturday afternoon.
Buffalo was led by freshman guard Jessika Schiffer who scored a career-high 14 points, including a career-high four three's, to go along with four rebounds and four steals. Junior Marissa Hamilton finished with 11 points, Loren Christie scored nine points in her first game back from injury and Hanna Hall and Theresa Onwuka also added nine points apiece.
Ohio jumped out to a 7-0 run taking advantage of a two plus minute UB scoring drought to open the game, before an Adebola Adeyeye offensive putback and a Schiffer three cut the lead to 10-5, but the Bobcats would rattle off a 6-2 run to take a 16-7 lead at the first media timeout. Christie drilled a big three at the top of the key to cut the lead to 19-14 but Ohio closed the quarter on a 6-0 run to take a 25-14 lead at the end of the first.
The two teams would trade baskets to start the second quarter before UB put together a 5-0 run, capped by a Schiffer second chance three, to cut the lead to 29-21 but Ohio converted on a transition bucket through contact to go up 32-21 at the media timeout. The Bulls would hang tough, putting together a 9-2 run, highlighted by a pair of triples from Schiffer and Hall, to cut the lead to 37-30 at the 1:15 mark and a second chance layup by Adeyeye would pull UB within seven at the half.
Ohio would extend their lead to 13 at the 8:09 mark of the third, but an 8-0 UB run, highlighted by a Christie strong drive to the basket and an Onwuka three would cut the lead to 47-39 at the 6:30 mark, and after another strong take by Christie the lead would be trimmed to 49-44 at the media timeout. Ohio would go back up by nine with just under a minute to go but Hamilton drilled a three from the corner in the final seconds to cut the lead to 57-51 at the end of three quarters of play.
Ohio started strong once again to open the fourth quarter, extending their lead to 12 at the media timeout. The Bulls put together a 5-0 run on a Hamilton transition three and an Onwuka bucket to cut the lead to seven at the 2:24 mark but that would be as close as the Bulls would get as Ohio was able to seal the victory from the charity stripe, going 4-for-5 from the line in the final minute.
The Bulls won the battle on the glass for the eight straight game, outrebounding Ohio 42-36, but the Bobcats were able to turn 22 UB turnovers into 29 points and held a 28-24 edge in points in the paint, while shooting just over 42% from behind the arc.
"This is a veteran team that we just played," said Felisha Legette-Jack. "This is the same team that's been together for the last three years. They are road-tested against Power Five teams and I thought we did a good job of keeping it close, but I think when we play the next time we are going to adjust a little bit better defensively.
The Bulls continue their homestand as they welcome Bowling Green to Alumni Arena on Wednesday, January 15, at 7pm.
