BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo volleyball team has one last chance to ready itself for Mid-American Conference play as the Bulls will host the Blue and White Classic this weekend at Alumni Arena. The Bulls will welcome St. Francis (PA), Cornell, and Canisius to town.
The Bulls are 2-7 on the season, most recently dropping a tough 3-2 decision to host North Dakota State in the finale of last weekend's tournament. Senior Rachel Sanks had a career day in that match with a personal best 20 kills and just four errors. She is currently second on the team in kills with 84. Senior Polina Prokudina leads Buffalo in that category with 89 kills. Junior Lexi Nordmann, who is the team's leading blocker at 1.00 per set, is also hitting a team-high .329. Defensively, sophomore Paige Beck leads UB with 101 digs. She tied her career high with 20 against NDSU last week.
St. Francis (PA) is looking for its first win of the season as the Red Flash come in to the match with an 0-9 mark. Madi Tyus leads the team with 80 kills, followed by 45 kills from Nicole Adams. Tyus also leads the Red Flash with 61 digs.
Cornell is 4-2 after wins over Utah State and San Francisco in California last weekend. A relatively, new look squad, Cornell is led in kills by Jada Stackhouse (49) but has featured a balanced attack with five different players with 30 or more kills. Stackhouse also leads the team with 33 blocks at the net.
Canisius was picked to finish first in their league and made it to the MAAC Championship in 2018, but have lost six straight to sit at 2-7 heading into the weekend. Leah Simmons, a First Team All-Conference selection last season, leads Canisius with 103 kills and a .255 hitting pct.
The tournament will begin with four matches on Friday. Cornell and Canisius will play in the opener at 10:30 am followed by a 12:30 pm match between the Bulls and St. Francis (PA). The Red Flash will be back in action at 4pm against Canisius and UB will wrap up the first day at 6:30 when it hosts Cornell.
On Saturday, St. Francis (PA) and Cornell will play at 10:30 am, followed by UB and Canisius at 12:30 pm.
