
Fair Shines as Bulls Put Up Strong Fight in 88-69 Loss at #3 Stanford

STANFORD, CA – Freshman guard Dyaisha Fair proved her spot alongside the best in the country and four Bulls scored in double-figures but the University at Buffalo women's basketball team came up short in an 88-69 loss to #3 Stanford at Maples Pavilion on Sunday afternoon.
The Bulls were led by a pair of freshmen in Fair and Elea Gaba. Fair led the Bulls with a game-high 24 points while adding six rebounds, three assists and five steals while Gaba netted a career-high 16 points. Senior Theresa Onwuka recorded her second double-double of the season with 13 points and 10 rebounds to go along with five assists and two steals while Loren Christie also got into double figures with 12 points.
Christie banked in a three to put the Bulls on the board and tie the game 3-3 in the early going but Stanford rattled off a 9-4 run to take a 12-7 lead at the first media timeout. Back-to-back buckets by Keowa Walters and Fair cut the Stanford lead to 16-11 at the 1:44 mark. Later, Gaba knocked down a baseline jumper and Fair scored on an acrobatic reverse layup before Gaba converted again through contact to tie the game at 17. Kiana Williams responded with a mid-range jumper to give the Cardinal a 19-17 lead after one quarter of play.
Gaba continued to go to work to start the second quarter as she scored on UB's opening possession to tie the game 19-19 but Stanford responded with a 7-1 run to take a 26-20 lead at the media timeout. The Bulls would hang tough as Christie drained a triple from deep to cut the lead to 26-23 and Fair blew by her defender for the lay in to cut the lead to 26-25 at the 3:53 mark. Later, Christie drilled a heat-check three to tie the game 28-28. Hannah Jump answered with a three of her own but then Fair converted a transition bucket to cut the lead to 31-30 with just over a minute to play. The Cardinal put together a quick 4-0 run but Gaba stopped the bleeding with a baby hook to cut the lead to 35-30 at the half.
Stanford got hot from deep to open the third quarter with back-to-back threes before Fair converted on a tough pull up jumper to cut the lead to 41-34 and Onwuka knocked down a mid-range jumper to cut the lead to 43-37 at the 7:41 mark. Lexie Hull answered with a three of her own to put Stanford back up by nine but the Bulls responded with a 6-0 run on buckets from Onwuka, Fair and Gaba to cut the lead to 49-45 at the media timeout. Stanford stayed hot from deep as Jump drained a three to spark an 8-0 Cardinal run to give the hosts a 56-45 lead and force a UB timeout at the 3:27 mark. The Bulls would not go down without a fight as they responded with a 7-0 run to cut the lead to 58-52 at the 1:33 mark but Stanford maintained a 63-52 lead at the end of the third.
After the two teams traded baskets to start the fourth, Stanford took advantage of a 2:33 UB scoring drought and put together a 7-0 run to take a 72-56 lead at the at the 6:59 mark. Buffalo responded with a 5-0 run off a three from Fair and a steal and transition bucket by Onwuka to cut the lead to 72-62 at the 5:34 mark but Stanford had an answer once again as they compiled a 9-3 run to take an 81-65 lead at the 2:44 mark and that would be all they would need to secure the victory.
The Bulls held their own in the paint as the tied the Cardinal with 32 points inside while also holding an 18-14 advantage in points off turnovers but Stanford held a 44-38 rebounding edge, an 18-10 edge in second chance points while outshooting UB from the floor and converting 12 three pointers from beyond the arc.
Buffalo heads back east to continue their four-game road trip in Philadelphia, with a pair of games in the Saint Joseph's Hawk Classic, beginning with a contest against Drexel at 2pm on Saturday, November 30.
