PHILADELPHIA, PA – The University at Buffalo women's basketball team defeated Drexel 63-59 in the first game of the Hawk Classic at Hagan Arena on Saturday afternoon.
Freshman Dyaisha Fair led all scorers with 26 points, including 4-of-8 from beyond the arc and 10-of-13 from the charity stripe, to go along with six rebounds, two assists and two steals. Senior Theresa Onwuka scored 19 points while also adding seven rebounds, two assists, three steals and two blocks and freshman Jessika Schiffer had a breakout performance, scoring a career-high nine points on 3-of-5 shooting from beyond the arc.
The two teams would trade baskets to start the game before Drexel used a 4-0 run to take an 8-4 lead at the first media timeout. The Bulls would respond with a 7-0 run, capped by a Schiffer triple off the assist from Fair, to take an 11-8 lead and UB would lead 11-10 at the end of the first.
Fair drained a triple on the opening possession of the second quarter and Onwuka followed with four straight points to give UB an 18-10 lead at the 8:44 mark. Later, Schiffer knocked down her second three of the game and Fair matched her backcourt mate with a triple of her own on the next possession to put the Bulls up 24-16 and they would lead 26-18 at the media timeout. Drexel responded with a 5-0 run out of the media to cut the UB lead to 26-23 at the 4:02 mark. Onwuka scored through contact to break a two minute scoring drought and put UB up 29-23 with just over a minute to play and they would lead 31-26 at the break.
The Bulls offense stalled for three and a half minutes to start the third but Onwuka broke the drought and converted the and-one to give UB a 34-28 lead and Fair drilled a spot up three a couple possessions later to put UB up 37-32 at the media timeout. After a Dragons bucket, Fair put together a 6-0 run on her own in less than a minute to give UB a 43-34 lead and later, Schiffer would splash a spot up triple from the wing to cap a 9-2 UB run and give the Bulls a 46-36 lead at the 2:31 mark. Buffalo would take a 52-44 lead through three quarters of play.
Drexel opened the fourth quarter on a 10-3 run to cut the UB lead to 55-54 at the 5:58 mark. Onwuka stopped the bleeding as she blew by her defender to put UB up 57-54 with five minutes to play. Later, Schiffer came up with the steal and found Fair for the transition bucket to put UB up 60-54 at the 3:40 mark. Drexel used a 5-1 run to cut the lead to 61-59 with 20 seconds to play but they would get no closer as the Bulls were able to seal the game from the charity stripe.
Buffalo shot 41.7% from the field and won the rebounding battle 41-33. The Bulls are now 42-0 over the last three years when holding teams to 59 points or less.
The Bulls wrap up play at the Hawk Classic tomorrow with a 12pm contest against American.
