SAN JOSE, CA – The University at Buffalo women's basketball team came up short in a 95-88 loss to San Jose State in a shootout at Provident Credit Union Event Center on Thursday night. Buffalo falls to 4-1 on the season while the Spartans improve to 4-2.
Freshman guard Dyaisha Fair once again led the way for the Bulls as she scored a game-high 28 points, including a career-high eight threes, to go along with three rebounds and seven assists and senior Theresa Onwuka added her first double-double of the season with 21 points, 12 rebounds and five assists. Sophomore Keowa Walters turned in another impressive performance as she set a new career-high with 17 points while also pulling down 13 rebounds and Marissa Hamilton added 10 points on 3-of-6 shooting from beyond the arc.
After the two teams traded baskets to begin the game, Walters converted back-to-back buckets to give UB their first lead of the game, 6-4, and they would lead 10-6 at the first media timeout. Fair knocked down her first triple of the game to put UB up 14-9 at the four minute mark. Later, Fair had a great look to Hanna Hall for three and then Onwuka went on a 5-0 run of her own to put UB up 22-10 at the 2:48 mark. The Spartans would respond with an 8-0 run to cut the UB lead to 22-18 but Onwuka stopped the run with a triple on the wing to give the Bulls a 25-18 lead after one quarter of play.
A second chance jumper from Walters gave UB an early 31-20 second quarter lead. The Spartans answered with a 4-0 run to cut the lead back to seven but the Bulls responded with a 6-2 run on a pair of triples from Fair and Hall to put UB back up by double-digits 39-28 at the 6:18 mark and they would lead 41-34 at the media timeout. The Bulls offense would continue to click as UB rattled off a 7-0 run, sparked by a second-chance jumper by Walters and a three from Fair to put UB up 48-34 with 2:04 to play but the Spartans would respond with a 7-0 run of their own, capped by a Ayzhiana Basallo three, to cut the Buffalo lead to 48-41 at the break.
The 48 first half points were the most scored in a half by UB this season. The Bulls shot 50% from beyond the arc in the opening half while holding a 25-13 advantage on the glass, turning 10 first half offensive boards into 16 second chance points.
The third quarter would prove to be the difference in the game as the Spartans outscored the Bulls 30-13. The Spartans used a 12-1 run to start the second half to retake the lead, 52-49, at the 7:10 mark. Walters would give UB their first field goal of the quarter to cut the lead to 53-51 but Danae Marquez would answer with a three on the other end to give the Spartans a 56-51 lead and they would lead 57-53 at the media timeout. Walters set a new career-high on a mid-range jumper in the paint to give UB a 58-57 lead but the Spartans respond with a 14-3 run to take a 71-61 lead at the end of the third.
After being held without a field goal for almost four minutes, Hamilton gave the Bulls a lift with back-to-back threes and Elea Gaba converted a bucket through contact to cap an 8-2 run and cut the Spartans lead to 73-69 at the 8:58 mark. Later, Fair drilled her sixth three of the game to cut the lead to 75-74 at the final media timeout but San Jose State would not be flustered as they rattled off a 7-0 run to go up 82-74 at the 4:17 mark. Fair did all she could to keep the Bulls alive as she drained her career-high eighth three to cut the lead to 86-80 with 2:48 to play and Hamilton buried a triple a few possessions later to cut the lead to 89-85 with 44 seconds remaining but it wouldn't be enough as the Spartans would seal the game at the charity stripe.
The Spartans shot 50% from beyond the arc, including 7-of-9 in the second half, while converting 17-of-19 attempts from the free throw line compared to just 62.5% from the charity stripe for the Bulls.
"We are excited to add Summer Hemphill as one of our captains tonight," said head coach Felisha Legette-Jack. "Now that she has made great strides in rehabbing her leg, she can now extend her focus to our team and we feel that it is important that she stand with our leaders and guide us to newfound heights. With Summer, Tessy, Hanna and Ade, we will continue to pursue championships with our CAB philosophy of Character, Academics and Basketball."
The Bulls return to action on Sunday for a 5pm showdown with #3 Stanford at Maples Pavilion.
