BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo volleyball team continues its 2019 season Thursday night as the #7 Bulls will face #6 Akron in the first round of the Mid-American Conference Tournament, hosted by Bowling Green. That match will begin at 7pm.
Buffalo won five of its final seven matches to finish with an 8-8 league record, only the third time that UB has won eight or more league matches, all of those coming in the last three years. Over the course of the season, the Bulls had an affinity for going the distance, playing 14 five-set matches, including nine of their 16 league contests.
UB has been led by its senior class, including Rachel Sanks and Polina Prokudina, who picked up all-league honors earlier on Wednesday. Sanks enters the MAC Tournament with 352 kills on the year, while Prokudina is right behind her at 344.
Senior setter Scout McLerran has done a great job running the Buffalo offense with 996 assists on the year, while she is second on the team with 192 digs.
Defensively, sophomore Paige Beck enters the conference tournament, which is right outside of her hometown of Toledo, OH, with 425 digs. UB is averaging 2.09 digs per set led by 0.89 from junior Lexi Nordmann and 0.85 per set from freshman Abby Leigh.
The Bulls and the Akron Zips split the season series with both teams winning on the road in five sets. The winner of the match will face #3 Bowling Green on Friday in the quarterfinals. Buffalo split the season series with the Falcons.
Those winners on Friday will advance to the semifinals, where they will meet the #2 seed, Central Michigan, who will receive a bye straight to the semis. Buffalo defeated Central Michigan in Mount Pleasant in five sets.
The MAC Championship match will take place on Sunday at 4:30 pm with the winner earning the league's automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.
All matches will air on ESPN+, while live stats will be available courtesy of Bowling Green.
