WEST POINT, NY - The University at Buffalo women's tennis team placed individuals in the round of 16 in both singles and doubles this past weekend as the Bulls competed at the always tough ITA Northeast Regionals, hosted this year in West Point, NY.
Action got underway on Thursday with qualifying rounds in singles as players tried to make the main draw of 128 players. Freshman Ambre Amat was successful in that venture as she defeated Camila Ordonez of St. John's 6-0, 6-3 and Stephanie Dolehide of Army, 7-6, 2-6, 11-9 to make the main draw, joining teammates Azra Deniz Comlek and Pia Schwarz.
Schwarz was the story for the Bulls as she reached the round of 16 before being matched up against the number two seed in the entire tournament. After an opening round bye, Schwarz defeated Shelly Yaloz of Boston University, 6-1, 6-2, and then she beat Chelsea Kung of Yale, 5-7, 7-5, 6-1. She put up a strong fight against Sofya Golubovskaya of Syracuse before ultimately falling, 6-4, 6-4. Amat won her first match in the main draw over Hailey Wilcox of Boston College, 6-3, 6-7, 6-3.
In doubles, the duo of Gabriella Akopyan and Nikoleta Antoniou-Karademitrou also found their way in the round of 16. They opened up with an 8-4 win over Binghamton and followed that up with an 8-5 victory over Cornell. They were stacked up with another Ivy League opponent in the round of 16 in Yale, where they fell, 8-4.
The Bulls will close out their fall campaign on Nov. 1 when they host the three-day UB Indoor Invite.
