Fridell’s Run Highlights ITA Regionals Performance

PHILADELPHIA, PA – The University at Buffalo men's tennis team concluded action at the ITA Northeast Regionals on Sunday hosted by Temple University in Philadelphia, PA. Senior Vilhelm Fridell made a run all the way to the round of 16 to cap off the event.
Fridell received a first round bye in the tournament and then won his first match over Charlie James of St. John's, 3-6, 6-4, 6-0. Fridell was then matched up with Cody Lin of Yale where he came away with a straight sets victory, 6-0, 6-4. In the round of 16, Fridell was matched up with the number two seed in the tournament in Karl Poling, ultimately falling, 6-3, 6-4.
Fellow senior Hao Sheng Koay won his first match of the main draw with a 7-6 (2), 6-2 win over Harsh Parikh of Penn. In the second round he took the opening set from the 16th seed of the tournament before falling in three sets. Junior Matthew Johnson also picked up a first round win with a 6-2, 7-5 victory over Hielke Moore.
In doubles action, both duos won their first round matches to reach the round of 32. Johnson and Koay came away with an 8-7 (0) victory over Anders Gibbons and Alejandro Quiles from Dartmouth. Fridell and junior Valdemar Holm were ranked 16th in the field and won their opening match against Lucas Linden Malmberg and Marco Rivolo of St. Bonaventure, 8-2.
Buffalo will close out the fall campaign at the MAC Fall Invite in Kalamazoo, MI from Nov. 8-10.
