Fridell’s Run Highlights ITA Regionals Performance

PHILADELPHIA, PA – The University at Buffalo men's tennis team concluded action at the ITA Northeast Regionals on Sunday hosted by Temple University in Philadelphia, PA. Senior Vilhelm Fridell made a run all the way to the round of 16 to cap off the event.

Fridell received a first round bye in the tournament and then won his first match over Charlie James of St. John's, 3-6, 6-4, 6-0. Fridell was then matched up with Cody Lin of Yale where he came away with a straight sets victory, 6-0, 6-4. In the round of 16, Fridell was matched up with the number two seed in the tournament in Karl Poling, ultimately falling, 6-3, 6-4.

Fellow senior Hao Sheng Koay won his first match of the main draw with a 7-6 (2), 6-2 win over Harsh Parikh of Penn. In the second round he took the opening set from the 16^th seed of the tournament before falling in three sets. Junior Matthew Johnson also picked up a first round win with a 6-2, 7-5 victory over Hielke Moore.

In doubles action, both duos won their first round matches to reach the round of 32. Johnson and Koay came away with an 8-7 (0) victory over Anders Gibbons and Alejandro Quiles from Dartmouth. Fridell and junior Valdemar Holm were ranked 16^th in the field and won their opening match against Lucas Linden Malmberg and Marco Rivolo of St. Bonaventure, 8-2.

Buffalo will close out the fall campaign at the MAC Fall Invite in Kalamazoo, MI from Nov. 8-10.
