Bulls Drop Two Games Saturday At Woo Pig Classic

FAYETEVILLE, AK – The University at Buffalo softball team dropped a pair of games on Saturday afternoon at the Woo Pig Classic falling to Wright State 8-4 in the first contest and 7-1 to Northern Iowa in the second game.

Wright State got off to a quick start in the first game as the Raiders scored three runs in the top of the second against UB starter Lace Smith. The Bulls got one back in the bottom of the second as senior Lauren Gambone went deep sending one over the center field wall. Wright State then scored two in the third and one more in the fourth to take a 6-1 advantage.

Freshman Katie Weimer singled up the middle with two outs in the fifth inning to pull the Bulls within 6-2, but Wright State scored one back in the top of the sixth. Buffalo hit its second long ball of the game in the bottom of the sixth as sophomore Sarah Edwards hit a two-run shot to right field to pull UB back to 7-4. The Raiders tacked on one more in the seventh.

Smith picked up the loss as she allowed three runs in an inning and a third. UB had four players with two-hit games including Weimer, Gambone, Leandra Jew, and senior Kenzie Koch.

In the second game, Northern Iowa staked itself out to an early three-run lead before UB put its only run on the board in the bottom of the second. Freshman Courtney Gilbert hit a one-out single to left field and she came in to score on a triple to center field from Edwards.

Northern Iowa added a single run in the third and the fifth and two more in the sixth to take a 7-1 lead. Freshman Brieanna Baker picked up the loss as she allowed five runs and seven hits in 5.0 innings. UB recorded five hits in the game.

The Bulls will wrap up play at the Woo Pig Classic tomorrow with a rematch against Northern Iowa at 11:00 am.
