BUFFALO, NY – Jessica Berzins hit a one-out walkoff double to cap a three-run seventh inning as the Canisius Golden Griffins came back to defeat the University at Buffalo softball team, 7-6, Wednesday afternoon at the Demske Sports Complex.
Canisius scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning before the Bulls took the lead in the top of the third. UB put runner on the corners with nobody out when freshman Courtney Gilbert drove in a run on a Canisius fielding error. Junior Ashton Earnhardt then drove in two more runs on a double to left center, giving the Bulls a 3-2 lead.
Canisius tied it up in the bottom of the third, but UB regained the lead just a half inning later as freshman Catrell Robertson hit her second home run of the season, a two-run shot to left field as UB took the 5-4 lead.
Canisius scored one in the bottom of the fifth, but UB again led by two in the top of the sixth as freshman Katie Weimer led the inning off with a solo home run to center field. The long ball was her seventh of the season, tying for fifth in school history in a single season.
With UB leading 6-4, the Griffs came to bat in the bottom of the seventh against freshman Ally Power. Canisius began the inning with a leadoff double and following a foul out, got a game-tying two-run home run from Megan Cuda. Canisius followed it up with back-to-back singles before the Berzins double scored the winning run.
""I'm very disappointed that we didn't finish today," said head coach Trena Peel. "We did a lot of thing great offensively. It was nice to see Katie and Catrell driving the ball hard for a pair of home runs. Unfortunately, we didn't have our best performance in the circle today. We are a great team and we are going to take these tough lessons and continue to grow and mature as ball players. I believe in us and I know that we will bounce back and be ready to go this weekend."
Power picked up the loss in relief for UB after sophomore Charlotte Miller started the game. UB finished with seven hits in the contest, six of those coming from three players. Earnhardt, Robertson and sophomore Leandra Jew each finished with two-hit games, while Weimer had the other hit, which was the home run.
The Bulls will return to Mid-American Conference play this weekend when they head to Western Michigan. The series will begin on Friday at 3:00 pm.
