Bulls Drop Two On Friday

CONWAY, SC - The University at Buffalo softball team lost a pair of games at the Chanticleer Classic on Friday. The Bulls fell 11-7 to Memphis and 7-3 to Furman.

Trailing 3-0 early, UB scored four in the bottom of the second as junior Savanna Norcio drove in two with a double and freshman Katie Weimer hit another home run, a two-run shot to put UB up 4-3. Another home run from sophomore Sara Edwards in top of the third extended the UB lead to 5-3.

Memphis took a 7-5 lead into the bottom of the sixth when back-to-back doubles by Kenzie Koch and Leandra Jew tied it up, but Memphis scored four in the top of the seventh for the win.

Norio, Weimer and Jew all had two-hit games against the Tigers.

Furman scored two runs in the top of the second to get the early lead in the second game. UB took its first lead in the bottom of the third as the Bulls put two runners on and then got another home run from Weimer, who hit a three-run shot. However, Furman scored five runs in the top of the fourth and neither team scored for the rest of the game.

Freshman Taylor Light gave the Bulls three innings of scoreless relief in the circle to spell freshman Brieanna Baker, who picked up the loss. Weimer went 3-for-4 in the game, while Jew and Danielle Lallos each had two hits in the contest.

"We have to find a way to put all three phases together in great pitching, timely hitting and great defense," said head coach Trena Peel. "We have had two of the three and once we get all three going we will be unstoppable. I'm very proud of Taylor Light for coming in to close the game and keep things simple on the mound."

The Bulls will play Furman again tomorrow morning at 10am and then meet the host Chanticleers at 4:45 pm.
