Bulls Win 800 Freestyle Relay, Break School Record at MAC Championships

BOWLING GREEN, OHIO - Buffalo women's swimming and diving team started the MAC Championships on Wednesday with strong performances all around. On the first night of the four-day event, UB won the 800 yard freestyle relay and also broke the school record in the process. After two events, UB sits third at the MAC Championships with 64 points, but UB only trails second-place Eastern Michigan by two points.
Megan Burns swam the anchor leg in 1:46.90, which was the fastest 200 yard split amongst all competitors in the event, to seal the Bulls' victory at the 800 freestyle relay. Sarah Baxter kicked off the event with a strong time of 1:48.79, while Jessica Powers and Kerry Giovanniello swam the second and third legs in times of 1:47.02 and 1:51.02, respectively. The Bulls earned 40 team points with the win and is the fourth-straight year the team has won the 800 freestyle relay at MAC's.
The Bulls gained another 24 points by finishing in seventh place in the 200 yard medley relay. Mallory Buha, Holly Olsen, Julia Box, and Megan Burns swam the event in a program's eighth-best time of 1:41.70.
UB is back in action on Thursday at Day 2 of the MAC Championships. The action will resume at 11:00 am starting with the 500 yard freestyle preliminaries. A full schedule of events for Thursday can be found here.The finals sessions on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday night will also air on ESPN3.
