Bulls Split Saturday's Action In Louisiana

HAMMOND, LA – The University at Buffalo, The State University of New York softball team picked up its first win of the 2016 season on Saturday as the Bulls defeated Tennessee State 7-1 this afternoon. UB then dropped its second game of the day to Nicholls State 3-1. The Bulls are 1-3 on the year.
UB got an outstanding pitching performance from freshman Lace Smith, who picked up her first career win. The Bulls got on the board with an RBI groundout from Katie Weimer in the top of the first and Tennessee State tied it up with a home run in the bottom half of the inning, but Smith then retired 12 of the next 13 batters.
The Bulls went back ahead in the top of the second as sophomore Sarah Edwards opened the inning with a single and then senior Kenzie Koch hit her first career home run, a two-run shot. Weimer drove in another run in the top of the fourth as a single drove in Savanna Norcio and sophomore Danielle Lallos drove in two runs with a double to left center.
UB added its seventh run in the top of the seventh on an infield single by Norcio. Smith recorded the win as she pitched six innings of three-hit ball, while striking out seven. Bobbi Langlois came in to pitch a perfect seventh. Norcio went 3-for-4 in the game, while Koch added two hits in the contest.
In the second game, the Bulls were kept off the scoreboard for six innings as Nicholls St. scored one run in the third and two in the top of the seventh against starter Ally Power, who struck out five batters in seven innings.
The Bulls got on the board in the bottom of the seventh as Koch singled up the middle to lead off the inning and she came in to score on a single to center field from Lallos.
Lallos went 2-for-3 from the plate, while freshman Courtney Gilbert also finished with two hits in the contest. The Bulls left 11 runners on base in the game.
The Bulls will wrap up play at the Lion Classic on Sunday morning when they face Southern Illinois at 11:00 am.
