HANOVER, NH- The UB men's tennis team opened their 2016 Spring season on the road against No. 42 Dartmouth. Overall it the matches were filled with back and forth action, but the Bulls drop their first match of 2016, 6-1.
On the day the Bulls won two matches, but only one match win is awarded in doubles to the team who wins at least two of the three doubles matches, while each singles match winner is given a point towards the final match result.
Overall UB won two matches of the nine with a single win in both singles and doubles. The lone doubles win for the Bulls came in the No. 3 doubles match where Sergio Arevalillo and Ethan Nittolo defeated George Wall/Max Fliegner, 6-4. Arevalillo took the momentum from his doubles win into singles play. He won in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4 in the No. 4 singles flight over Diego Pedraza.
The Bulls forced a tie breaker in No. 2 double, but Amar Hromic and Pablo Alvarez fell 7-6 (9-7) against No. 5 Roko Glasnovic/Diego Pedraza in the tight match. Tony Miller and Akhil Mehta lost 6-0 to No. 9 Dovydas Sakinis/Brendan Tannenbaum in No. 1 doubles. Mehta battled hard in No. 5 singles to force a third set. Yet, Fiegner won the three-set match, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2.
Alvarez took the lead after the first set, but Dartmouth's Ciro Riccardi prevailed in the three-set match, 6-3, 7-6, 6-4. No. 18 Sakinas defeated Hromic in No. 1 singles in straight sets, 7-6, 6-4. Nittolo drop the No. 3 singles match, 6-1, 6-4, against Tannenbaum. Noah Hajdu-Andersson lost in straight sets to Wall, 6-4, 7-5, in No. 6 singles.
Overall, head coach Lee Nickell was pleased with the Bulls' fight and performance against a nationally ranked Dartmouth side, but pointed out that his team needs to preform well at the end of matches.
"Today's match was very well played by both teams. Dartmouth is considered a threat to win the Ivy League this year, and we were toe to toe with them at every position. We need to do a better job of closing out sets, as we were leading in multiple sets and couldn't close out the big points. This was a solid start for the spring and we need to play at this level tomorrow against a very good Bryant team."
The Bulls resume action tomorrow when they face a tough Bryant team. Doubles action will begin at 9am and will be played at Dartmouth.
