
Akron Outlasts UB Women's Basketball, 81-70

AKRON, OH – The University at Buffalo, State University of New York women's basketball team dropped an 81-70 Mid-American Conference setback Wednesday night to Akron at James A. Rhodes Arena. The Zips (18-5, 8-4 MAC) snapped the Bulls' (13-9, 6-5 MAC) four-game winning streak.
The contest featured nine ties and six lead changes, though the Zips did not trail in the second. Freshman Stephanie Reid and senior Christa Baccas tallied back-to-back buckets in the final six seconds of the first frame to deadlock the game at 36 entering intermission.
The Zips took an eight-point lead with 10:15 left in the game, the largest spread of the game at the time, but the Bulls battled to tie the game at 63 on a Baccas layup at 5:29. Holding a 72-69 edge, Akron converted a three-point play at 1:55 before closing the game with a 6-for-6 showing at the line.
UB, who scored 50 of its 70 points inside, was paced by senior Kristen Sharkey's 22 points on 7-for-12 shooting. It was her fourth 20-point game in the last six outings. Baccas added 14 points and a team-best eight boards. Reid chipped in a career-best 10, sophomore Alexus Malone scored nine and junior Mackenzie Loesing eight. Reid had another collegiate-best performance dishing out a game-high seven assists. She joined Baccas and Malone with three steals apiece.
Akron's Sina King and Hannah Plybon shared a team-high with 21 points each. Anita Brown added 13 and DiAndra Gibson 11. Brown grabbed a game-high nine rebounds and King chipped in seven. Kerri McMahan had five assists for the Zips.
UB forced Akron to commit 24 turnovers, 16 of which came in the first stint, while the Bulls swiped 13 steals. The host Zips shot 52.9 percent for the game to the Bulls' 38.4 percent. UB was a cold 1-of-24 from the arc.
Though the series is tied at 20-20, UB has dropped 10 straight to the Zips dating back to 2010-11.
The Bulls will next travel to Western Michigan on Saturday for a 2 pm game.
