
Bulls Fall To Duquesne At Home, 79-62

BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo, The State University of New York women's basketball team (6-2, 0-0 MAC) lost their second straight game on Sunday at home against the Duquesne Dukes, 79-62. The Bulls held the 37-33 lead at half but couldn't hold on as they were outscored by 21 in the second half.
"This game was frustrating because our motto is to respect all and fear none and we didn't live by that today," said head coach Felisha Legette-Jack. "We didn't compete liked we needed to in the second half and I'm very disappointed in our comradery and our fight."
The third quarter is where the game was lost for the Bulls as the Dukes raced out to a 29-point quarter, taking the 15 point lead into the final quarter. After the two teams exchanged three pointers, UB's coming from Joanna Smith, the Dukes went on a 15-2 run over the next four minutes to take the nine point lead. Duquesne kept up the defensive pressure and finished off the quarter on a 11-5 run to take the unsurmountable lead into the final quarter.
The Dukes jumped out to a quick start in the first quarter as they took the early 13-6 edge thanks to six points from Amadea Szamosi. The Bulls didn't waste much time as they fought back to tie the game at 20 at the end of the quarter. Stephanie Reid notched four quick points before Courtney Wilkins came off the bench and scored eight for the Bulls including back-to-back three's to tie the game.
The second quarter was dominated by freshman Gabi Bade as she was able to net a career-best 11 points in the quarter. Bade was able to hit three deep balls and a pull up jumper to help push UB out to the 37-33 lead at halftime. The Bulls started the quarter on an 11-4 run and Brittany Morrison finished off the quarter with a nice offensive rebound and layup. Morrison finished the second quarter with five boards for UB as they entered the locker room with the lead for the fifth time this season.
After giving up the lead in the third quarter, the Bulls weren't able to get any closer in the final 10 minutes as Duquesne held on to win 79-62. Ayoleka Sodade made an impact in her limited minutes in the fourth quarter as she scored a career-high four points and grabbed two rebounds in three minutes of action.
The Bulls had three players score in double figures as Bade led the way with a career-high 16 points on 5-for-9 from the floor and 3-for-5 from behind the arc. Bade also notched three assists and two steals in her career game. Reid had a solid afternoon for the Bulls as she finished with 14 points to go along with four rebounds, four steals and three assists in the loss. Katherine Ups finished the game with 10 points and three rebounds while Smith and Wilkins each netted eight points for UB.
The Dukes were dominant in the paint on Sunday as they outscored the Bulls 38-12 while also holding the 43-32 edge in rebounds. Duquesne was able to score 18 points off UB turnovers and scored 16 second chance points while the Bulls bench outscored the Duquesne bench 30-12. The Bulls defense forced 21 Duquesne turnovers on the afternoon and they have now forced at least 16 turnovers in every game this season.
The Bulls will return to the court on Wednesday as they will travel to take on Big 4 foe St. Bonaventure in Olean at 7 pm.
