OLEAN, NY – The University at Buffalo, The State University of New York women's basketball team (6-3, 0-0 MAC) dropped their third straight game on Wednesday night on the road at Big 4 foe St. Bonaventure by the score of 59-32. The 32-point effort from the Bulls was their lowest scoring output since 2001 against Tulane.
"We gave it our best effort tonight and we lost to a very good team that will challenge any team that comes to this area," said head coach Felisha Legette-Jack. "We have no excuses, we lost the basketball game and we can live with that."
The key to the game came in the final five minutes of the second quarter as the Bulls offense sputtered. After UB cut the Bonnies lead to four behind back-to-back layups from senior Karin Moss, the Bulls were only able to score one point in the final 5:34 of the half. The Bulls were outscored 15-1 by St. Bonaventure down the stretch of the quarter as they took the 29-11 lead into the locker room and never looked back, leading the rest of the game.
The Bonnies jumped out to the quick 6-2 lead at the first media timeout of the game as Katherine Ups was able to score the lone bucket for the Bulls after a nice feed from her sister Liisa Ups. Point guard Stephanie Reid and freshman Gabi Bade were able to notch layups down the stretch of the quarter for the only buckets as UB trailed 14-6 after the first quarter. The Bulls went 3-for-17 from the floor in the opening quarter.
The Bulls cut the Bonnies lead to 14 on the first possession of the second half as Liisa Ups had a nice feed to Mirte Scheper who finished off her chance at the hoop. Following a Katherine Ups layup off, Joanna Smith drained her lone three-pointer of the game but the Bonnies we able to close out the quarter on a 12-4 run to enter the fourth leading 46-22.
The fourth started with back-to-back Reid layups but the Bonnies wouldn't let UB get any closer. Freshman Ayoleka Sodade showed some hustle down the stretch of the fourth as she earned a steal and layup but the Bulls dropped their third straight, 59-32.
Reid was the lone UB player to score in double figures on Wednesday as she finished off her game with 10 points, four rebounds and four steals in the loss. Scheper finished off her night with a career-high seven rebounds to go along with three points and a career-high four blocks while Katherine Ups scored six points and grabbed five boards. Moss came off the bench and scored four points, three rebounds and three steals for the Bulls.
The Bonnies held the huge edge in rebounds, 52-30, and shooting as they finished the game going 23-for-55 from the floor (41.8%). The Bulls shot a season-low 18.6% from the floor and 1-for-19 from three-point range in the loss while holding the 14-7 edge in steals.
The Bulls will now have 12 days off before they travel to take on another Big 4 foe, Niagara, on December 21. Tip against the Purple Eagles is set for 7:00 pm.
