
Bulls Down Bowling Green To Sweep Season Series

BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo, The State University of New York volleyball team picked up its sixth MAC victory of the season on Friday, defeating Bowling Green, 3-1. The Bulls swept the season series from the Falcons for the first time since 2011 and improved to 6-7 in conference play. The six wins tie the mark set in each of the previous two years.
The Bulls took the contest 25-17, 24-26, 25-23, 25-21 as UB outhit the visiting Falcons .217 to .096. UB got out to a quick start to the match as freshman Madison Clark served the Bulls to the first nine points of the set. Sophomore Cassie Shado was big in the run as she had two kills and two blocks over the first nine points. UB opened up a 15-5 lead following a BG attack error, but Bowling Green made a late run, pulling within 20-17. However, UB scored the final five points of the set off the serve of sophomore Tessa Ooyama.
The Falcons came back in the second set with a 26-24 win despite a late UB rally, but the Bulls would answer right back in the third. BG led 15-13 when the Bulls scored four straight points, capped off on a BG attack error. The Bulls took a 21-17 lead, but Bowling Green went back in front 23-22 before UB scored the final three points, the last coming on a kill from freshman Raven Jordan.
Bowling Green scored the first six points of the fourth set and continued to hold on to the advantage as the Falcons led 16-11 when the Bulls went on a 9-1 run, which included a few kills from freshman Megan Wernette. The Falcons tied the match back up at 20-20, which prompted a UB timeout, but the Bulls answered with a 5-1 run as a solo block from Shado ended the evening.
"It wasn't pretty, but we are glad to come out with a win, especially at home," said head coach Blair Brown Lipsitz. "Lip really came up big, especially late in the match and that is what you want from your seniors, especially on senior weekend."
Lipski finished with 20 kills and just five errors as she hit .312, while also adding 16 digs. Shado added 14 kills, while Wernette had seven kills and just one error. Senior Akeila Lain added eight kills of her own. Clark finished with 50 assists and 10 digs on the night.
Defensively, Lipski led the Bulls with her 16 digs, while freshman Abby Beecher had 13 and Ooyama added 12. The Bulls outdug Bowling Green, 71-54, in the match. UB finished with 12.0 blocks, led by seven from Shado and five from Wernette.
The Bulls will close out the home portion of their schedule tomorrow night when they host Miami (OH) at 7:00 pm. Lispki, Lain and Marissa Prinzbach will also be honored prior to the match.
