
Bulls Even MAC Record With 3-1 Win At Bowling Green

BOWLING GREEN, OH – The University at Buffalo, The State University of New York volleyball team evened its conference record on Saturday afternoon as the Bulls defeated Bowling Green, 3-1. The victory was UB's first true road win of the year.
The Bulls took the contest 25-19, 21-25, 25-18, 25-18 as UB outhit Bowling Green, .183 to .171. In the opening set, Bowling Green led 14-13 when the Bulls scored six straight points to take a 19-14 advantage. The Falcons pulled within 22-19, but UB scored the final three points, the last one coming on a service ace from sophomore Tessa Ooyama.
Bowling Green took the second set 25-21 to tie the match up at one set all, but the Bulls came back after the intermission and dominated the play. UB opened the third set on an 8-5 run, capped off on a kill from freshman Megan Wernette. The Falcons pulled back within 14-13, but UB answered with three straight points, the last coming on a kill from senior Megan Lipski. The Bulls went on to win the set 25-18, as senior Akeila Lain ended the set with a solo block.
Bowling Green scored four of the first five points in the fourth set, but then the Bulls went on a 7-1 run as Ooyama capped it off with another ace to give the Bulls an 8-5 lead. A kill from Lipski opened up an 18-11 advantage, but the Falcons scored four straight to pull back within 18-15. UB remained ahead by three at 21-18 when it scored the final four points of the set, the final one coming from freshman Valisha Watkins, which clinched the set and the match for the Bulls.
"This was a great team victory and it was nice to see our players respond after a tough loss last night," said head coach Blair Brown Lipsitz. "We had tremendous support from our women's soccer team who was in attendance and they really helped push us on the court during some tough rallies. We are excited to get back home for our next four matches."
Lipski had another outstanding evening as she finished with a match-high 17 kills, while adding 18 digs. It was her second double-double in as many nights.
Sophomore Cassie Shado added 12 kills, while Watkins had 11 and Wernette finished with 10. Senior Marissa Prinzbach finished with 44 assists and eight digs.
The Bulls had a season-high seven service aces, including two each from Ooyama, Niki Bozinoski and Megan Lin.
Defensively, Ooyama finished with a team-high 19 digs, while freshman Abby Beecher had the best match of her career with 13 digs. UB had six solo blocks, led by three from Lain and two from Wernette.
The Bulls will return home next weekend as they begin a season-long four match home stand. UB will host Kent State on Friday evening at 7:00 pm.
