
Bulls Continue Hot Road Stretch With Four-Set Win At Akron

AKRON, OH – The University at Buffalo, The State University of New York volleyball team won its third straight road match on Thursday evening, defeating Akron, 3-1. The Bulls have now improved to 5-6 in conference play.
UB took the match 25-19, 25-14, 15-25, 25-15 as the Bulls outhit the Zips, .280 to .138. UB took advantage of some Akron service errors in the opening set to take 17-9 lead, but the Zips pulled back within 20-16 before a kill from senior Megan Lipski clinched the opening set.
The Bulls then scored the first six points of the second set, which forced Akron into the early timeout. A block by Lipski and sophomore Cassie Shado increased the lead to 20-9 and a kill by freshman Valisha Watkins gave UB set two, 25-14.
The Zips came out of the break with a 25-15 win in the third set, but unlike the last two matches, the Bulls made sure this one never saw a fifth set.
The Bulls hit .538 in the fourth set as they had 16 kills and just two errors as a team in that set. With the Bulls holding a slim 10-9 lead, UB rattled off six straight points, coming from the serve of sophomore Tessa Ooyama. The Zips would pull back within five at 20-15, but UB scored the final five points to take the set and the match.
"We just continued to fight tonight and it is great to see us playing well on the road," said head coach Blair Brown Lipsitz. "Madi played extremely well yet again tonight and we got contributions from everyone on the court."
Watkins led the Bulls with 16 kills, while senior Akeila Lain had 12 kills and just two errors on 16 swings, hitting .625 for the match. Lipski had another double-double with 10 kills and a team-high 16 digs. Freshman Madison Clark had 45 assists and a kill, to go along with three digs.
In addition to Lipski's 16 digs, Ooyama added eight and sophomore Niki Bozinoski had seven. The Bulls added 11.0 more blocks this evening, led by six from freshman Megan Wernette.
The Bulls remain on the road Saturday evening when they head to Ball State for a 7:00 pm match.
