
Bulls Open 2014 Cross Country Campaign at Duquesne

PITTSBURGH, PA – The University at Buffalo cross country teams opened their 2014 campaigns Saturday at the Duquesne Duals held at Schenley Park. There was no overall scoring for the meet, though the women claimed three of four dual meet victories, placing six in the top 15 on the five-kilometer course. The men raced a limited squad, traveling just seven to compete in the 8K.
Sophomore Corinne Birchard paced the way for UB women finishing seventh overall in a field of 73 runners with a time of 18:47.80, a career-best time. Classmates Meagan Hopkins and Melinda Wheeler followed in 10th and 11th, respectively, with finishes of 18:58.70 and 19:02.80. Sophomore Amy Shaw clocked in at 19:08.60 in her first race as a Bull to place 13th. Senior Chrissy Clarkin and junior Meaghan Wessel placed consecutively, 14th and 15th, in 19:12.30 and 19:14.20, while sophomore Bailey Kemp rounded out the Bulls' top seven with a 19:16.60 finish.
Junior Frankie Pfeil led the men's team with a 17th-place finish out of 98 competitors. He crossed the finish line in 27:01.20. Junior Derek Palafox placed 26th with a 27:16.40 finish. Sophomores Lloyd Webb and Pier Berkmans earned finishes of 38th and 40th with times of 27:32.70 and 27:33.30. Rookie Tom Meehan clocked a time of 28:24.10 in his first collegiate meet. Sophomores James Dickinson and Seamus Degan closed out the Bulls' performances. Dickinson finished in 29:11.60 and Degan in 29:56.50.
The Bulls will race their lone home meet of 2014 on Saturday, Sept. 6 hosting the UB Stampede at Beaver Island State Park.
