BUFFALO, NY – The State University of New York, Buffalo women's basketball team picked up an 89-54 exhibition victory over visiting Buffalo State Saturday afternoon. Four Bulls posted double-figure point performances, while the team hit 46.9 percent of its field goals.
The entire UB squad saw minutes during the contest as the Bulls welcomed three freshmen to the hardwood of Alumni Arena. Eleven different players scored and all 12 crashed the boards during the balanced UB attack.
Junior Mackenzie Loesing hit one of UB's seven first-half threes for an indefinite lead 1:17 into play. The game started slowly as Buffalo led just 10-7 five minutes in, but 11 straight followed to secure the Bulls a double-digit cushion. UB held the Bengals to four points in the final seven minutes of the first frame, while scoring 16 of its own, for a 50-21 gap at intermission.
Like the first stint, the Bengals contested UB early in the latter half. The Bulls marginally outscored BSU, 11-8, to lead 63-29 at 15:37. Freshman Liisa Ups and redshirt-sophomore Rachael Gregory scored back-to-back layups before more than three scoreless minutes ticked off the clock.
The Bulls took the largest lead of the game, 81-38, at 7:51, but the Bengals outscored UB 16-8 down the stretch. Senior Ayana Bradley accounted for each of the Bulls' final eight points.
"We stayed focused and locked in and I think that those are signs that this team is really starting to mature," said head coach Felisha Legette-Jack. "I think we're as strong as 12 players right now. We can put people at multiple positions and that's really fun to see."
Sophomore Alexus Malone put up a game-best 22 points on 9-for-11 shooting and added nine boards. She chipped in a game-high three blocks. Bradley also fell one rebound shy of a double-double, tallying 16 points on 8-for-10 shooting, and pulling down nine rebounds.
Gregory scored 12 points and junior Karin Moss 10. Liisa Ups and Moss dished out seven and six assists, respectively, while Moss, Bradley and freshman Katherine Ups each made a trio of steals.
UB narrowly outrebounded the Bengals, 55-49. Buffalo State's Brittnee Perry led the game with 12 boards, while adding 12 points, for a double-double showing. Olivia Luciani scored a Bengal-best 17 points, highlighted by a game-high three three-pointers.
The Bulls open their 2014-15 campaign Friday at 5 pm hosting Siena in Alumni Arena.
