INDIANAPOLIS, IN – The University at Buffalo's Brittney Kuras posted her fastest time of the season in the 200-yard freestyle preliminaries on Friday at the NCAA Division I Women's Swimming and Diving Championships at the IU Natatorium in Indianapolis.
Racing in the first of seven heats in the 200-yard freestyle, Kuras finished in 1:47.05 to win the heat over three University of Virginia swimmers as well as individuals Florida and Villanova. Kuras lowered her season best mark from 1:47.83, which she posted in winning the event at the Mid-American Championships on March 1. She finished 35th overall among 52 entrants. Allison Schmitt of Georgia, the 2012 Olympic champion, was Friday's top qualifier in 1:42.94.
"Brittney had a great race today and it is always good to win your heat," said UB head coach Andy Bashor. "We are looking forward to the 100 free tomorrow with Mallory [Morrell] and Brittney swimming."
In Thursday's action, Mallory Morrell earned All-America honors as she finished fifth in the consolation final of the 50-yard freestyle in 22.46 seconds and placing 13th in the overall standings as she earned four team points for the Bulls. Morrell became UB's first All-America since diver Meili Carpenter earned the honor at the 2010 championship meet.
Kuras and Morrell will compete in the 100-yard freestyle on Saturday. Preliminaries begin at 11:00 am with championship finals at 7:00 pm.
