ATHENS, OH – Beginning their final road trip of the year, the University at Buffalo softball team dropped a pair of games at Ohio on Friday afternoon. The Bobcats had their offense going as they combined for 19 runs in the two games. Ohio won the first contest 8-0 and the second game 11-3.
The Bulls managed just one hit off of Lauren McClary in the first game as the Ohio pitcher struck out seven batters in five innings, while walking two. The Bobcats scored one run in the bottom of the first and three in the second off of Buffalo starter Tori Speckman, who struck out six batters in the loss.
Ohio scored single runs in the fourth and fifth inning to take a 6-0 lead and then scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth, which ended the game.
Senior Kristin Waldron reached base twice in the game as she picked up the only Buffalo hit in the top of the fourth inning. She also walked in the second.
In the second game, Ohio kept its offense going scoring three runs in the bottom of the first off of Holly Johnson, who started for UB. The Bobcats added two runs in the bottom of the second and another in the third to lead 6-0.
Buffalo got on the board in the top of the fourth as freshman Karly Nevez hit a one-out single to left field. She moved to second following a single from Alexis Curtiss and then scored on a double to right center by junior Alyssa Ward.
However, Ohio answered with three more runs in the bottom of the four before Buffalo put up another two in the fifth inning by using the long ball. Junior Andi Saucier led off the top of the fifth with a home run to center field and following a Buffalo out, sophomore Tori Pettine hit her second home run of the season, sending a shot to left field. The Bulls pulled to within 9-3 following the home runs, but two runs by Ohio in the bottom of the fifth ended the game.
The Bulls recorded six hits in the second game, all from six different players. Johnson lasted just 0.2 innings in the game before she was replaced by senior Haylee Land.
The Bulls return to action tomorrow when they open up a two-game series at Akron. First pitch is set for 2:00pm.
