BUFFALO, NY – For the second straight game, the University at Buffalo softball team out hit Bowling Green, but again they fell to the visiting Falcons, 8-4. The loss drops UB to 8-20 on the season 1-6 in the MAC.
The Falcons scored four runs in the top of the first inning, taking advantage of a couple UB blunders in the field. The Bulls had errors both at third base and center field, which led to Bowling Green runs.
The Bulls were able to get back in the game though, which began in the bottom of the second. Junior Alyssa Ward hit an infield single to the left side and was driven in as sophomore Sammi Gallardo hit her first home run of the season, a shot to left field.
The Bulls added another run in the bottom of the third as freshman Karly Nevez hit a two-out single and came in to score on a double to center field from Alexis Curtiss. The Bulls tied the game up in the bottom half of the fourth as Gallardo reached second base on an error by the center fielder. She moved to third on a sacrifice bunt from Kristin Waldron and then came in to score as sophomore Tori Pettine legged out an infield single.
However, the Falcons, who were in stretch of 11 of 12 batters being retired, regained the lead in the top of the fifth, staging a two-out rally. Andrea Arney and Katie Yoho hit back-to-back doubles to take a 5-4 lead. The Bulls had opportunities in both the fifth and sixth innings, but left runners on base each time. Bowling Green then added another three runs in the top of the seventh. UB recorded three hits in the bottom half of the seventh, but Curtiss was thrown out at home for the final out of the game.
Senior Holly Johnson picked up the loss as she pitched all seven innings, allowing eight hits, walking seven and striking out seven. Four of the eight runs allowed were earned.
Gallardo went 3-for-4 from the plate and actually reached base in all four plate appearances as she reached on an error. Nevez and Curtiss each added two-hit games and four other players each had a hit.
The Bulls will return to action on Wednesday afternoon when they head to Canisius for a pair of games. First pitch set for 3:00 pm.
