BUFFALO, NY – Despite outhitting their opponent on Saturday afternoon, the University at Buffalo softball team fell to visiting Bowling Green, 3-1, at Nan Harvey Field. The one run was a far contrast from yesterday when Buffalo scored 23 runs in its doubleheader.
Both teams threatened in the first inning, but neither could get on the board through the first two innings. Bowling Green scored first as they put up a two-spot in the third inning against Buffalo starter Tori Speckman. The Falcons opened the inning with a walk and a sacrifice bunt, moving their runner to second. She then stole third and was chased in on a sacrifice fly for the first run. However, the next batter Andrea Arney sent a long home run over the left field fence to put Bowling Green up 2-0.
The Bulls cut into the BG lead in the bottom of the fifth as senior Kristin Waldron led off the inning with a double to center field. She then moved to third on a groundout from Jessica Griffin and came in to score on a single to right field from sophomore Tori Pettine. The Bulls threatened for more as Holly Luciano followed that up with a single up the middle moving Pettine to third with just one out. During the next at bat, Bowling Green managed to throw Pettine out at home and then the Bulls hit into a ground out to end the inning.
Bowling Green managed to get the run back in the top of the sixth, but Buffalo was able to muster just one hit over the final two innings, a double from Alyssa Ward in the sixth.
Ward went a perfect 2-for-2 on the day and reached base three times as she was also hit by a pitch. Luciano also had a two-hit performance as she went 2-for-4 from the leadoff spot. Waldron and Pettine added the other hits for Buffalo.
Speckman picked up the loss as she pitched 2.2 innings, allowing two hits and two runs, while walking three and striking out three. Senior Holly Johnson pitched the final 4.1 innings and allowed just three hits, but walked six batters, while striking out four and allowing one run.
The Bulls conclude their two-game series with Bowling Green tomorrow afternoon with first pitch set for 1:00 pm.
