
UB Swimmers Post Nine Olympic Trial Cuts at Speedo Meet

BUFFALO, NY – Several of the University at Buffalo's men's and women's swimmers competed over the weekend at the USA Swimming Speedo Champions Series Sectional Meet held at the Erie Community College's Burt Flickinger Athletic Center.
Four swimmers, Brittney Kuras, Matt Hogan, Mike Dugan and Mallory Morrell, attained nine U.S. Olympic Trial cuts in the four-day long course meet.
Kuras attained four trial cuts over the weekend. She turned times of 25.87 in the 50-meter freestyle, 56.08 in the 100-meter freestyle, 2:02.81 in the 200-meter freestyle and 2:18.44 in the 200-meter individual medley.
Hogan picked up two additional trial cuts. He posted a 23.33 in the 50-meter freestyle and a 1:52.67 in the 200-meter freestyle. He had already earned a trial cut in the 100-meter freestyle last summer.
Dugan earned his second and third trial cuts in the 50-meter freestyle (23.37) and 100-meter freestyle (51.12), He also posted a trial cut in the 100-meter butterfly in the summer of 2010.
Morrell finished in 26.35 in the 50-meter freestyle for her first trial cut.
Also competing in the meet were men's team members Cory Zorsch, Christian Muller, Phil Aronica, Eric Culver, Josh Meints and Tommy Steele. Taylor Steffl, Melissa Trail, Marissa Murphy, Alie Schirmers and Brynn Marecki also competed for for the UB women. Aronica, Schirmers, Matt Schwippert and former UB diver Meili Carpenter had also qualified for the Olympic Trials at meets prior to last weekend's competition.
"I'm extremely proud of everyone that went for it," said UB head coach Andy Bashor. "Trial cuts are very fast and to come after our short course season and compete in a long course meet is outstanding. It is impressive for the work these guys have put into this."
The 2012 Olympic Trials will be held from June 25-July 2, 2012 at the Qwest Center in Omaha, NE. The Olympic team, which will compete in London, will be determined at this meet.
