BUFFALO, NY – University at Buffalo junior Mike Dugan has been selected as the Mid-American Conference's Men's Swimmer of the Week. The league announced from its Cleveland headquarters today.
At the Zippy Invitational, won by the UB men by nearly 800 points, Dugan won two individual events and was part of four of UB's five winning relay squads. Dugan set the meet and pool record and earned an NCAA B cut with his win in the 50-yard freestyle in 20.16 and won the 100-yard butterfly by a hundredth of a second over teammate Cory Zorsch. In the relays, Dugan anchored the UB men to a win in the 200-yard freestyle relay as Matt Hogan, Zorsch, Ryan Smrekar and Dugan broke the meet and pool record set in last season's meet by the Bulls by one-hundredth of a second as the UB foursome finished in 1:22.45 to eclipse last season's winning mark of 1:22.46. Dugan also anchored the winning 400-yard medley relay (3:19.83) and the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:03.89). He swam the butterfly leg of the victorious 800-yard free relay to a 6:50.57 finish. Additionally, he won the B consolation final of the 100-yard freestyle in a season-best 45.94 to place ninth overall.
"Congratulations to Mike for this honor," said head coach Andy Bashor. "I believe that this is a reflection of all the good work and effort he has put into his swimming over the past several months. He is well deserving of this award for this week."
Dugan is the fourth Bull to win a MAC Swimmer of the Week award during the 2012-13 season. Eric Culver won the men's weekly award on October 17 while Brittney Kuras (November 7) and Mallory Morrell (November 14) have earned women's honors this season.
The Bulls are taking a break from competition for the remainder of the month to concentrate on exams. UB hosts Niagara on January 12, 2013 in its next action.
