Bulls Drop Five-Setter At Bowling Green

BOWLING GREEN, OH – The University at Buffalo volleyball team nearly pulled off the upset on Friday night, falling in five sets on the road at heavily-favored Bowling Green. The Bulls picked up victories in the second and fourth sets, but fell to 8-17 on the year.
The Falcons took the contest 25-17, 21-25, 25-22, 19-25, 15-9 as they outhit UB .232 to .210. After winning the first set easily, the Bulls came back in the second to tie the match up. The Bulls trailed in the second 12-9 before going on a 7-1 run to take a 16-13 lead in the set. The Falcons went on to tie the set at 17-17 , but the Bulls scored four straight points, capped off with a service ace from junior setter Dani Reinert, who was making her first start since suffering an ankle injury nearly two weeks ago. BG pulled back within two on three occasions, but the Bulls scored the final two points for the set.
The Bulls got out to the early lead in the third set as they led 15-11 midway through, but BG answered with a 6-2 run tying it up. The match remained tied at 22-22; however the Falcons scored the final three points for the set. The Bulls were not fazed as they came back to take the first four points in the fourth set. The Bulls led by as many as eight in the set at 20-12, but Bowling Green was able to pull within three at 21-18. UB answered with a 4-1 run to take the set and force a fifth set for the second straight match.
The fifth set belonged to the host Falcons as they raced out to a 10-3 lead and never looked back. UB tried to fight back late as it got as close as 12-8, but Bowling Green scored three of the final four points for the victory.
Junior Dana Musil finished with a season-high 20 kills, one of three players in double figures for the Bulls. Sophomore Liz Scott added 12 kills, while freshman Tahleia Bishop had 11. Reinert had 45 assists and eight digs, playing in all five sets.
Defensively, junior Kelly Svoboda finished with a match-high 21 digs, her fourth straight match with 20 or more digs. Musil added nine digs, while freshman Megan Lipski had six. The Bulls had 11.0 total team blocks, led by seven from freshman Akeila Lain. Reinert had four, while Bishop, Scott and Carissa McKenna each finished with three.
The Bulls will remain on the road tomorrow for their final match away from Alumni Arena as they play at Miami (OH). The match is scheduled to begin at 5:00 pm.
