First Half Troubles Doom Bulls At Wright State

FAIRBORN, OH – The University at Buffalo women's basketball team was outscored 34-19 over the opening 20 minutes of play on Sunday afternoon, as the Bulls fell to Wright State, 66-51. UB played the Raiders even during the second half, but were unable to overcome the early struggles.
Wright State led through out the contest scoring the first eight points of the game. UB was able to cut the deficit to five at 12-7, but Wright State went on a late run, taking a 17-point lead in the opening half. The Bulls were able to cut it to 15 at the half.
Wright State extended its lead to 24 in the second half before the Bulls made a late charge using its defense to force the offense. The Bulls went on a 15-6 run midway through the second half, capped off on a fast break layup from Rachael Gregory. A three pointer from Nicki Hopkins cut the Wright State lead to 60-46, but the Bulls would get no closer.
"We didn't bring the energy we needed in the first half and we are capable of shooting the ball much better than we did today," said head coach Felisha Legette-Jack. "I thought we did a much better job in the second half and we will continue to learn each and every day. I love this team's fight and passion and we will get better."
Gregory led the way with 14 points and eight rebounds, while sophomore Christa Baccas finished with the double-double, recording 11 points, 14 rebounds, three blocks and three steals. Baccas played a career-high 39 minutes in the contest.
Hopkins finished with a season-high eight points, while freshman Karin Moss added a career-best six points and four assists. Junior Margeaux Gupilan finished with six points and seven assists, while Sloane Walton and Mackenzie Loesing each finished with three points.
Preseason Horizon League Player of the Year Kim Demmings finished with a game-high 22 points, while KC Elkins added 18 points and four assists.
The Bulls continue their four-game road trip on Friday night as they face Dayton in the opening game of the Marriot Classic. Tip off is scheduled for Noon.
