Late Scoring Drought Hurts Bulls At Nationally-Ranked Dayton, 68-44

DAYTON, OH – The University at Buffalo women's basketball team went scoreless for over 11 minutes in the second half and despite allowing just 68 points to nationally-ranked Dayton the Bulls fell, 68-44, in the first game of the Dayton Marriott Classic.
The Bulls led early in the contest, scoring the first four points of the game, but Dayton showed why its still undefeated, forcing the Bulls into 27 turnovers, including 13 in the opening half. The Bulls held a five-point lead on two occasions early on as sophomore Christa Baccas scored eight-straight first half points. The Flyers went on to lead by as many as eight points in the opening half before taking a 29-23 lead into the half.
UB opened the second half with five straight points as freshman Karin Moss knocked in three of her career-high 11 points to pull Buffalo within three. Sophomore Kristen Sharkey followed it up with layup to pull the Bulls within one. UB had an opportunity to tie it up down three as freshman Rachael Gregory hit a jumper with 17:51 left and was fouled sending her to line. However, Gregory would miss the free throw and it would be the last UB points for over 11 minutes. In that time, Dayton went on a 23-0 run to take a 54-30 lead. Buffalo would get no closer than 20 for the remainder of the night.
Gregory finished with 12 points and nine rebounds, just missing her first career double-double. Gregory went a career-best 8-for-12 from the free throw line.
Moss finished 3-for-6 from behind the arc for the first double figure game of her career, while she also played solid on the defensive end, recording two steals. Baccas completed the double-figure scorers with 10 points, adding six rebounds, two assists, two blocks and two steals.
Freshman Mackenzie Loesing added four points and a career-high seven rebounds off the bench.
Dayton, who improved to 5-0 on the season, was held under 70 points for the first time this year, including games against Top 25 opponents, DePaul and Vanderbilt. Amber Deane finished with 14 points and five rebounds before fouling out. Brittany Wilson added 13 points and six rebounds, while Kelly Austria had 11 points and a game-high seven steals.
The Bulls return to action tomorrow night when they continue play at the Dayton Marriott Classic, facing Eastern Illinois at 7:00 pm.
