Bulls Drop Sunday Affair To Bowling Green, 79-59

BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's basketball team could not defeat the defending Mid-American Conference champions, falling to Bowling Green, 79-59, Sunday afternoon at Alumni Arena. The loss drops UB's record to 5-13 on the season and 0-4 in the MAC.
The Bulls took an early lead in the contest as senior Brittany Hedderson hit a pair of three pointers, which gave UB a 6-4 advantage. Buffalo would lead one more time at 7-6, but a three pointer from Bowling Green's Jasmine Matthews put the Falcons back up. Bowling Green led 19-11 when the Bulls went on an 8-0 run, using three pointers from both junior Nicki Hopkins and sophomore Margeaux Gupilan in the process. UB tied it up at 19-19 on a jumper from Hedderson with 8:13 left. The Falcons responded with a 7-0 run of their own and led for the remainder of the game. The Bulls pulled to within three in the final minute of the first half, but another three from Matthews gave the Falcons a six-point halftime edge.
The Falcons came out of the break and scored the first seven points to take a 43-30 lead. The Bulls pulled to within eight on one more occasion as Hopkins knocked down her second three of the afternoon with 9:28 left in the second half, but BGSU answered with a 14-0 run, taking its largest lead of the game at 22.
Hedderson led the way with 28 points, her fourth straight 20-point performance. Hedderson moved into seventh place in school history in scoring at 1,190. She added six rebounds, two assists, a block and three steals. Gupilan also reached double figures with 10 points, three rebounds, three assists and a steal.
Hopkins added six points as she went a perfect 2-for-2 from behind the arc, while freshman Christa Baccas added five points and two blocked shots. Hampered by foul trouble, Nytor Longar had four points and three rebounds in 20 minutes. Senior Beth Christensen did not score, but had seven rebounds, two blocks and a steal.
Bowling Green (14-3, 4-0) had three players in double figures led by 19 points and seven rebounds from Alexis Rogers. Jessica Slagle added 18 points and seven rebounds, while Matthews had 14 points and four assists.
The Bulls will conclude their first round of games against the MAC East on Thursday night when they travel to Kent State. Tipoff is set for 7:00 pm.
