Women's Soccer Gears Up for 2011 With Summer Action

BUFFALO, NY - Before reporting to campus in preparation for its season opener at Binghamton August 19, a number of women's soccer players took part in summer leagues, with Colorado native's Megan Abman and Lauren Coviello leading their club team to a national championship game appearance.
Abman (Denver, CO) and Coviello (Parker, CO) were key parts of their Real Colorado National 91/92 under-19 club team that earned a regional berth after winning the state club championship. The squad then won a western regional title that included teams from California, New Mexico, Idaho, Wyoming, Utah, Nevada, Oregon, Washington and Montana.
Now a part of the final four teams in the nation, Real Colorado had a round-robin tournament with the winners of the three other regions, and quickly started 2-0 with wins over the New Jersey champion and the Minnesota champion. In the win over Minnesota to earn a chance at the national title, Coviello sealed the win with a goal in the 89th minute. In the championship game against the Texas state champions, the game was pushed to overtime before a late goal by Texas gave it the 2-1 win over Colorado.
Other Bulls were also busy during the summer, including a pair of new faces. Incoming freshmen Katie Roberts and Megan Giesen went to the Region II regionals after leading their team to a Ohio North State Cup title.
Juniors Taylor Thompson and Shannon Fisher spent the summer playing with the Toronto Lynx in the W-league of the United Soccer League. The Ontario natives were part of the U20 Lady Lynx squad and Fisher saw action in seven games.
Now focused on the season ahead, the Bulls welcome back a large group of talented returning players along with a deep recruiting class. Fans can see the team in its home opener Aug. 26 against Bucknell, with kickoff set for 7 pm.
