BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo softball team dropped a pair of games on Friday afternoon to Ohio, falling in the opener 6-5, and then dropping the second game to the Bobcats, 8-4. The Bulls did combine to hit three home runs in the doubleheader.
The first game looked to be going UB's way early on as the Bulls were able to grab a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a single from senior Alexandra Bejarano, scoring Holly Luciano. The Bulls continued to lead 1-0 into the bottom of the third when Buffalo pounded out four runs. Bejarano again came through as she singled to right field, scoring Kristin Waldron. The big hit in the inning then came from sophomore Jessica Griffin, who hit a three-run home run to centerfield.
Ohio crept back to score two in the fourth and another two in the fifth, to pull within 5-4. The top of the sixth inning began with an Ohio triple, but then the rain came in as the two teams waited out a delay that lasted more than an hour and twenty minutes. Once play resumed, neither team would score in the sixth, sending the game into the seventh with the Bulls ahead. However the Bobcats began the inning with a double and drove home the tying run on a one-out single. With two outs, Ohio was able to score the go ahead run on a wild pitch to take its first lead of the game. The Bulls were retired on three pitches in the bottom of the seventh.
Freshman Tori Speckman picked up the loss as she pitched five innings, allowing four runs and striking out five batters. Freshman Sammi Gallardo went 2-for-3 in the contest, while Waldron and Bejarano also had two hits.
In the second game, it was the Bobcats who got out to the quick start, taking a 5-0 lead through three and a half innings. The Bulls got on the board in the bottom of the fourth as Bejarano rocked a home run to left field, pulling the Bulls within 5-1.
The Bulls scored another two runs in the bottom of the fifth as Waldron reached on a fielder's choice, scoring senior Lindsay Hampton. During the next at bat, Tori Pettine flied out to right field, driving in Ashley Bertot. Neither team scored in the sixth, but Ohio was able to score another three runs in the top of the seventh to go up 8-3. UB tacked on one run in the bottom of the seventh on a home run from Luciano.
Junior Holly Johnson picked up the loss as she allowed four runs in 2.2 innings. Bertot and Waldron each finished with two hits in game two.
The Bulls will begin a two-game series tomorrow against Akron. First pitch is set for 2:00 pm. The second game in the series will be on Sunday at 1:00 pm.
