Women Finish Fifth at MAC Championships
The University at Buffalo's women's swimming and diving team scored a fifth-place finish at the 2011 Mid-American Conference Championships at Ohio University's Aquatic Center. The Bulls finished the four-day meet with 328.5 points as the homestanding Bobcats took the team title.
Simmons Defends 100-Yard Freestyle Title
Sophomore Caroline Simmons defended her MAC title as she won the 100-yard freestyle, breaking her own school record and establishing a pool record in Saturday's final night of competition. Simmons won the race in 49.67, breaking the mark she set in winning last year's MAC Championship by two-hundredths of a second and earning an NCAA B cut. On Friday, she established a B cut with her fifth-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle finals in 1:49.12 and had a B cut in Thursday's 50-yard freestyle, finishing second by one-hundredth of a second to Ohio sophomore Lauren Funk. Simmons broke her own UB record in the effort finishing in 22.79 after swimming 22.85 in the preliminary heats, establishing an Ohio pool record and qualifying first overall. Simmons was UB's lone representative on the league's first-team.
Relayers Establish Three New School Records
The Bulls set three relay records at the meet. On Wednesday's opening night, UB set a new record in the 800-yard freestyle relay as Logan Mason, Jordan Deren, Alie Schirmers and Tracy Vogel finished sixth among the eight squads in 7:27.67, breaking the old mark of 7:30.39 set at the 2009 MAC Championships. Thursday, the Bulls broke the 200-yard freestyle relay mark. UB's foursome of Marissa Murphy, Karly Moore, Jessie Koltz and Caroline Simmons finished in 1:32.47, earning a B cut and lowering the school record by .45 seconds. In the meet's final event on Saturday, the 400-yard freestyle relay, the Bulls set their third record. Murphy, Koltz, Moore and Simmons finished in 3:23.61, earning another B cut mark.
Marecki Earns B Cut Mark
Junior Brynn Marecki attained an NCAA B cut in the preliminary round of the 100-yard breaststroke on Friday. Marecki turned in a 1:02.70 clocking to qualify fifth for the finals. In the championship race, she finished fifth in 1:03.21. Marecki also reached the championship final of the 200-yard breaststroke as she finished eighth in a season-best 2:16.46.
Pratt-Collins Picks Up Second-Team Honors
Sophomore Katelyn Pratt-Collins was named to the All-MAC Second Team. She finished sixth in the championship final of the 200-yard backstroke in 2:00.78. She also won the consolation final of the 100-yard backstroke in a season-best 56.20 and finished second in the consolation final of the 400-yard individual medley in 4:20.84.
