Filzen Goes for a Career-High 30 in Win Over Milwaukee

BUFFALO, NY – Zach Filzen scored a career-high 30 points to lead the University at Buffalo men's basketball team to an 80-65 win over Milwaukee in a Sears BracketBuster matchup at Alumni Arena on Saturday night.
Filzen shot 11-of-15 from the field, including 6-of-9 from beyond the arc. He scored 23 of his points and had five three-pointers in the first half to help the Bulls build 41-32 halftime lead.
Milwaukee fought back to cut the lead to six with 14:43 remaining. But a Filzen three, followed by back-to-back Jawaan Alston layups put the Bulls back up 62-49 with 12:28 left. The lead would remain in double-figures the rest of the way.
The Bulls (16-9) shot 59 percent from the floor and an equally sizzling 57 percent from beyond the arc. Defensively, UB forced 14 turnovers and held the Panthers to 40 percent shooting from the field to snap their seven-game winning streak.
Four of the Bulls' five starters scored in double-figures. Byron Mulkey scored 13 and added five rebounds, five assists and three steals. Mitchell Watt added 11 points and a career-high three steals. Titus Robinson had 10 points and a pair of blocks.
Javon McCrea did a little bit of everything for the Bulls as he finished with eight points, seven rebounds, a career-high six assists, two blocks and two steals in only 17 minutes.
Milwaukee (16-12) was led by Anthony Hill who scored 19 points and Tone Boyle who added 16.
"Milwaukee was a really good team and our guys responded to the challenge," head coach Reggie Witherspoon said. "I think we got back to playing with defensive intensity and energy. I thought it was good for the whole game, but I thought it started to show itself in the second half."
Buffalo will return to conference action on Thursday night when it plays at Kent State.
