Women Defeated at Ohio
The University at Buffalo women's swimming and diving team dropped a 163.5-131.5 decision at Ohio University on Saturday in the week's lone action. The Bulls are now 1-2 overall and 0-2 in the Mid-American Conference. The UB men's swimming and diving team was idle last week.
Kuras Tops Women's Efforts
Sophomore Brittney Kuras won three individual honors and also combined on a UB relay victory to lead the Bulls efforts against the Bobcats. Kuras opened the meet with a win in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:52.37 and followed with a first-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle in 51.62. She finished with a victory in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:07.21.
Morrell, Murphy, Schirmers Also Take Individual Races
Also winning individual races against Ohio were junior Mallory Morrell, sophomore Marissa Murphy and senior Alie Schirmers. Morrell won the 50-yard freestyle in 23.52 while Murphy set a season-best mark in taking the 100-yard butterfly in 56.47. Schirmers took the 200-yard breaststroke by a slim margin as she touched out Ohio's Tori Bagen by .12 hundredths of a second. Schirmers won in 2:22.37 to Bagen's 2:22.49.
200 Freestyle Relay Also Victorious
The Bulls also took the 200-yard freestyle relay, the meet's final race, in a season-best mark as the foursome of Murphy, Taylor Steffl, Kuras and Morrell finished in 1:34.92. The time was more than three and a half seconds faster than the A foursome's previous top mark of 1:38.61 set at the season-opening WNY Invite. The time also shaved a second and a half from the team's fastest time, set by UB's B entry at the WNY Invite.
Andy's Assessment
Head coach Andy Bashor commented on his women's team's performance after the meet on Saturday. "We raced and competed well today. We are a young team and this was their first away meet and they handled it well," he said. "We have to tip our hat to Ohio, they were the better team today. We will use this as motivation to get better for the end of the season."
Squads to Host Colgate
The men's and women's teams will host a non-conference clash this Saturday against Colgate at 1:00 pm at Alumni Arena Natatorium. Both squads scored victories against the Raiders in last season's meeting in Hamilton. The UB men won 165-104 while the women scored a 152.5-144.5 win as the Bulls secured the win with a first and third place finish in the final event, the 200-yard freestyle relay in the first-ever women's meeting between the squads. The Colgate men lost to Lehigh while the women defeated the Mountain Hawks in the October 29 season opener.
