Bulls And Eagles Split MAC Meets
The University at Buffalo men's and women's swimming and diving teams split Saturday's Mid-American Conference meets at Eastern Michigan. The women scored a 161-137 win over the Eagles while the men suffered their first defeat of the season with a 164-136 loss. It was the second consecutive win in the series for the UB women and their first victory in Ypsilanti.
Simmons Leads Women's Swimmers
In the women's meet, UB won eight events with Caroline Simmons winning two individual races and anchoring both winning relays. Simmons won the sprint freestyle races on Saturday. She took the 50-yard freestyle in 23.59 and then followed to win the 100-yard freestyle in a season-best 51.85. The Bulls swept the relay races. Kayla Pratt-Collins, Brynn Marecki, Jessie Koltz and Simmons took the opening race of the meet with a 1:46.33 clocking in the 200-yard medley relay. The Bulls finished the meet with a win in the 400-yard freestyle relay as the foursome of Karly Moore, Koltz, Jordan Deren and Simmons took first in 3:31.70.
Hogan Posts Four Wins For Men's Squad
Matt Hogan won two individual events for the UB men, setting season-bests in both wins and was part of both winning relays. In the 200-yard freestyle, he finished in 1:40.94 and came back later to take the 100-yard freestyle in 45.66.
UB also swept the men's relay races, setting season-bests in both races. Phil Aronica, Hogan, Matt Schwippert and Jared Heine won the 200-yard medley relay in 1:31.20. In the 400-yard freestyle relay, Aronica, Mike Dugan, Heine and Hogan posted a season-best 3:03.79.
Andy's Assessment
Head coach Andy Bashor remarked following the Eastern Michigan meet, "Overall I am very excited about how we raced and dove in the meet," said Bashor. "We had a lot of in-season best times and the coaching staff is very pleased on how we are getting better each week. We have put in great effort in practice and it is showing in the results. It was a great victory for the women, it's the first time we have defeated EMU at their pool. The guys just came up short against the best in the conference. One thing that this meet showed is that we are getting better but still need to continue to learn how to become faster over the next couple of weeks to peak at our championships."
Women Host MAC Rivals This Weekend
While the men are off until February 4 when they travel to Penn State, the UB women host Akron and Ball State this weekend at Alumni Arena Natatorium. The Bulls will face the Zips at 5:00 pm on Friday, January 28 and follow with a matchup with the Cardinals at 1:00 pm on Saturday, January 29. The Bulls have won the last three meetings against both Akron and Ball State.
