Bulls Split Opening Day of Coastal Carolina Classic

CONWAY, SC – The University at Buffalo softball team opened the Coastal Carolina Classic with an extra innings win over Oakland, 6-5, but dropped the second game of the day to Coastal Carolina, 9-1, bringing their record to 8-13 overall.

The first game of the weekend went back and forth against Oakland, with both teams earning five runs off five hits at the end of seven innings. Jaime Sheffler had two hits, with Candice Sheehan, Sharon Barr and Jessica Griffin adding a hit each. Barr hit her first home run of the season in the bottom of the second to get things started for Buffalo but the Bulls were down by one going into the bottom of the seventh. In the bottom of the seventh inning, the Bulls got a lucky break asTaylor Franich struck out but was able to get to first base on a passed ball and later stole second. Franich scurried to third on a wild pitch and made it home on another passed ball to send the game into extra innings. The Bulls held off the Golden Grizzlies in the top of the eighth and won the game in the bottom of the inning. Sheffler singled and advanced to second on an Oakland fielding error. Sheffler scored the winning run after two Buffalo batters were hit by pitches to load the bases and Kristen Gallipani picked up the RBI as she was also hit by a pitch to end the game.
Barr pitched the complete game, striking out six batters.

Against Coastal Carolina, the Bulls were able to rally five hits, but only managed to put up one run. The only Buffalo run of the game came in the second inning with a double from Alex Bejarano, who scored off of a single from Franich. The Chanticleers scored at least one run in every inning except the fifth to doom the Bulls.
Kate Kraus earned her first Division I start, pitching four innings before being relieved by Barr, who pitched the final inning for Buffalo.
The Bulls continue play at the Coastal Carolina Classic tomorrow with a game against Sacred Heart at 10:00 am, followed by a game against Houston Baptist at 12:15 pm.
