CONWAY, SC – The University at Buffalo softball team continued play at the Coastal Carolina Classic on Saturday, dropping the morning game to Sacred Heart, 4-3, and falling to Houston Baptist, 5-2, this afternoon.
Against Sacred Heart, the Pioneers scored first off a Courtney Lee home run in the bottom of the first. The Bulls evened the game in the top of the second and took the lead with a run in the top of the fourth, but Sacred Heart earned three runs in the bottom of the fourth. The Bulls put up one more run in the top of the seventh after a pair of doubles from Kristin Waldron and Sharon Barr but it wasn't enough as the Pioneers went on to win 4-3. Against Houston Baptist, the Bulls scored first, earning a run in the bottom of the second as Alyssa Ward started off the inning with a single up the middle and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Sheehan. Saucier flied out to left field but Ward was able to move to third and scored off an RBI single from Griffin. The Huskies tied it up in the top of the fifth but the Bulls were able to regain the lead in the bottom of the fifth with Kristen Gallipani singling down the left field line and advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt from Jaime Sheffler. She then stole third to set up Waldron for the RBI. Gallipani's stolen base was her third of the season and 27th of her career, which puts her in sole possession of the third-place spot on UB's all-time career record list for stolen bases. The Bulls let the game get away from them in the sixth inning as the Huskies put up four runs to eventually win the game, as the Bulls were unable to put up another score.
