UB Softball Defeats North Texas in Day Two

DENTON, TX – The University at Buffalo softball team completed day two of the Sleep Inn Classic today, taking on Arkansas in the early game and finishing the day against host North Texas. The Bulls fell to the Razorbacks, 6-0, but saw success against the Mean Green, winning 5-3, to even their weekend record at 2-2.

The Bulls were blanked in game one, but kept the game scoreless for the first three innings until the Razorbacks got on the board with a pair of hits in the top of the fourth. The Bulls struggled to get on base, with their closest chance at a score coming in the bottom of the third inning. Kristen Gallipani sent a line drive up the middle and made it to second on a sacrifice bunt from Ashley Bertot. The Bulls had another chance to score in the bottom of the seventh. With Sharon Barrwalking to first, freshman Alyssa Ward was able to hit a single to left field to put two runners on base, however the Bulls were unable to produce a score out of the inning. Arkansas scored the remainder of their runs in the top of the seventh inning. Barr got the start on the mound, but was relieved by Katie Ivancich midway through the fifth inning. The Buffalo pitchers combined for six strikeouts in the game.

The Bulls saw success in game two of the day, defeating the host team, North Texas, 5-3. In the top of the third inning, Buffalo got on the board first, as Bertot singled to get the momentum moving in the Bulls' direction. Bertot's hit was followed by a double from Gallipani, which sent Bertot home for the first Buffalo run of the day. Kristin Waldronkept the hit steak alive with a single to right center. Gallipani was able to score on the play to put Buffalo up by two. Waldron stole second to set up a double from Ward, which sailed down the rightfield line, giving Waldron the go-ahead and the Bulls a 3-0 lead. The Mean Green answered in the bottom of the third, scoring two runs of their own. Bertot scored an unearned run in the top of the fifth to extend the Buffalo lead. North Texas came back with another run in the bottom of the sixth to cut the lead, but the Bulls scored an insurance run in the top of the seventh to put the game away. Waldron advanced two bases off a walk and passed ball, allowing Barr to send home an RBI with a double to right center. The Bulls held off the Mean Green in the bottom of the seventh to seal their second win of the weekend.
Terese Diaz started game two on the mound for the Bulls, but was relieved partway through the third inning by Barr. The Buffalo pitchers finished game two with six strikeouts. After two days of play, Gallipani leads the team with a .600 batting average, earning six hits in 10 at bats, including two doubles and an RBI.
The Bulls will wrap up their first weekend of play tomorrow with one final game against Colorado State. First pitch is set for 10:00 am.
