Bulls Pick Up Win at Cowgirl Classic

LAKE CHARLES, LA- After being rained out yesterday, the University at Buffalo softball team hit the field on the campus of McNeese State University to take part in the Cowgirl Classic today. The Bulls played three games, dropping game one to Louisiana Tech, 5-2, and falling to McNeese State, 9-3, but finishing up the day with a win over Louisiana Tech, 10-7.

In game one, the Bulls scored first, earning their first run in the bottom of the second inning. Sharon Barr started out the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Alyssa Ward.Jessica Griffin also walked to put runners on first and second.Dominique Carcone pinch ran for Barr and was sent home when Alex Bejarano singled through the right side. The third inning was scoreless but the Lady Techsters answered with three runs in the top of the fourth inning and another in the top of the fifth to build a lead. Buffalo answered with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning with Ashley Bertotstarting off the inning with a single to shortstop and stealing second base. Kristen Gallipani perfectly placed a sacrifice bunt to send Bertot to third, givingKristin Waldron the opportunity to send home the RBI with a double to center field. The Bulls wouldn't score again as the Lady Techsters went on to win game one, 5-2.

The Bulls took on a tough McNeese State in game two, falling to the Cowgirls, 9-3. Terese Diaz hit her first home run of the season in the top of the fourth inning to put the Bulls on the board, but the Cowgirls put up seven runs between the third and fourth innings.The Bulls scored again in the sixth inning as Waldron singled to right field and advanced to second when Ward walked. With runners at first and second, Bejarano singled to left field to send home Waldron. Waldron had an RBI in the seventh inning but it wasn't enough as the Cowgirls went on to win, 9-3.

In the rematch with Louisiana Tech, the Bulls dominated most of the game, winning 10-7. Griffin led the way with four RBI's and Andi Saucier batted in another two. Griffin hit the first home run of her collegiate career in game three. The Bulls had a strong third inning where they were able to rally for five runs to take a quick 5-0 lead. Buffalo kept a comfortable lead throughout the game, going into the final inning with a 10-3 lead. The Lady Techsters gave the Bulls a scare as they scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh, but the Bulls were able to hold on for the win. Overall, the Bulls had a successful all-around game with Saucier and Diaz each hitting doubles and Waldron slamming her first triple of the season. Barr pitched the complete game for Buffalo, striking out seven batters.
The Bulls will hit the road next for a week long trip out west. The first game will be next Friday, March 5 when the Bulls take on Cal Poly at noon as part of the San Diego Classic.
