BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo men's tennis team rallied for an exciting 4-3 win over Cleveland State on Sunday afternoon at Miller Tennis Center.
The Vikings took the doubles point with wins at second and third doubles to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
The Bulls began to battle back in singles action as Onder Balci won 6-2, 6-0 at third singles and Clement Mainguy followed with a 6-2, 6-2 victory at second singles to put UB up 2-1. Cleveland State retook the lead with wins at fourth and fifth singles, but Faiz Nasyam evened the match with a 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 win at the sixth position and Theodoros Mitsakos clinched the match for UB in a three-set thriller, winning 2-6, 7-6, 6-4 at first singles.
"Today was an amazing match," said head coach Lee Nickell. "Credit to Cleveland State, they came in with amazing energy and played great. We had tremendous efforts from Onder and Cement that set the tone putting us in a position to stay in the match. We have the utmost faith in all our guys and knew if we kept things close, we would have a small window of opportunity. Today we too advantage of our opportunity. It's time to rest up as we have a tough test next weekend in Boston and Providence."
Buffalo returns to action on Friday, February 6 at Harvard.
