OXFORD, Ohio – The University at Buffalo women's basketball team dropped its midweek contest at Miami (OH) 76-52 on Wednesday night at Millett Hall.
Freshman forward Meg Lucas led the Bulls offensively as she recorded her sixth double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds to go with three steals. Junior Janyah Bohanon also scored in double figures with 10 points, junior guard Paula Lopez recorded eight points and a team-best five assists and Aniya Rowe added seven points on the night.
Lucas gave the Bulls an early spark, scoring the first six points of the game, and late Rowe hit a cutting Bohanon for a fastbreak layup to give the Bulls a 10-8 lead at the first media timeout. Miami responded with a 7-0 run to go up by five before Lopez drained a three on the wing and Rowe knocked down a midrange jumper to pull UB within three at the end of the first.
Bohanon drained a knock down jumper and Rowe came up with a steal and score to tie the game at 19 early in the second quarter but the hosts answered with a 15-0 run to go up by double digits and they would maintain a 40-25 lead at the half.
Lopez drained a three on UB's first possession of the third quarter and Ella Corry followed with a transition and-one bucket to cut the lead to single digits, but the hosts answered with a pair of threes to go back up by 15 at the media timeout and they would extend the lead to 21 at the end of the third.
Bohanon got a free throw line jumper to drop through contact before Lucas converted on a pair of jump shots of her own as the Bulls looked to chip away early in the fourth quarter. Freshman Diann Jackson gave Buffalo good minutes, scoring six points in the final frame.
Buffalo shot 40% from the floor and won the battle of the glass and were even in offensive rebounding but they committed 30 turnovers and Miami (OH) capitalized, scoring 30 points off those miscues, while also adding 42 points in the paint.
Up next, Buffalo will return home for a two-game homestand beginning on Saturday, January 24 as they welcome Kent State to Alumni Arena for a 2pm contest.
