BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo track and field program is set to compete at the Geneseo Spring Opener this Friday and Saturday. Action at SUNY Geneseo is scheduled to begin at 2:30 pm on Friday and resume on Saturday at 9:45 am, weather permitting.
The Bulls enter this weekend's competition with momentum, following three meets in two states last week that featured numerous personal records, eight top-ten program performances, one freshman record and one school record. The Bulls had two travel groups, one in North Carolina at the NC State Raleigh Relays and another in Texas for the Texas State Bobcat Invite and the University of Texas Relays.
Stella Kapp set a new personal record in the women's high jump at the Texas Relays with a mark of 1.63 meters, ranking 10th all-time in UB outdoor history. The freshman will be making her javelin throw event debut at Geneseo, alongside freshman Krista Perry on Friday to begin the action at 2 pm.
Kevin Gabalski broke his personal best in the men's decathlon at the Texas Relays, rising to fourth on the all-time UB outdoor list with a score of 6,679. Along the way, the senior had three new personal best performances, beating his previous career marks in the 400-meter, 110-meter hurdles and javelin throw. This Saturday at Geneseo, Gabalski is scheduled to compete in the men's long jump and the 110-meter hurdles. The senior had a mark of 6.50 meters in the decathlon long jump at Texas.
Graduate transfer Rachel Hirschkind made her debut with the Bulls at the Raleigh Relays, setting a new personal record time of 10:55.85 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Hirschkind joined the UB outdoor leaderboard to rank fifth all-time. The graduate student returns to familiar territory at Geneseo, being a member of the school's cross country team for four years before transferring to Buffalo. Hirschkind is expected to compete in the women's 1,500-meter on Saturday.
The Bulls also have several athletes returning to action following a week off or making their outdoor debut at the local competition.
Kenneth Gulloso enters the competition at Geneseo following a strong performance in the first meet of the outdoor season at Richmond. Gulloso finished third in the men's hammer throw with a mark of 51.63 meters. Gulloso's mark was just shy of his record that ranks eighth in UB outdoor history (52.27m). The junior will compete in the men's hammer throw on Friday, scheduled for 2:30 pm alongside freshman Michael Dearie.
Ryan Cardichon is expected to compete in the men's high jump following a strong performance in his outdoor debut at Richmond. The freshman placed second in the event with a mark of 1.95 meters. Cardichon was less than a tenth of a meter shy of reaching the UB outdoor record book (2.03m).
Uma Bhattacharjee is scheduled to compete in the women's 100-meter dash and the 4x100-meter relay. The sophomore ran the Bulls fastest time so far this season, finishing the event with a time of 12.19. Bhattacharjee's time was also a personal record and fell just shy of the UB outdoor top ten (12.03).
