KALAMAZOO, MI – The University at Buffalo men's tennis team defeated Western Michigan 4-2 at Sorensen Courts on Sunday afternoon to claim the 2025 Mid-American Conference Men's Tennis Tournament Championship.
It is UB's third tournament championship in program history, all under head coach Lee Nickell. The Bulls also earned the regular season title.
Trailing 2-0, the Bulls mounted their comeback as Faiz Nasyam won 6-3, 6-1 at six singles and Clement Mainguy followed with a hard-fought 3-6, 6-2, 6-0 three-set victory at the third position to tie the match.
It then came down to the senior duo of Daniils Snaiders and Cheng Tang in a pair of three-set matches, with the former winning 7-6, 3-6, 6-3 at fourth singles before the latter clinched the championship with a 2-6, 7-6, 7-5 victory at second singles.
Snaiders and Tang were named to the All-Tournament team with Tang taking home Most Outstanding Player honors.
"Today was just a monumental comeback," said Nickell. "Western was better than us in the wind and conditions early on with this being our first match outside since January. WE expected it to be a little ugly but the guys just bought in, they knew that they would find it and just had that no quit attitude and I'm so proud of these guys."
"D, Rex and Sean have all been through it. All these seniors, as hard as we've had it, for them to come through and clinch it for us is just outstanding and shows how hard they work and how much they wanted it. This whole team bleeds blue, all throughout the year they stayed loyal to this school and appreciative of everything they get, and I couldn't be happier and more excited with the way this all worked out."
The 2025 NCAA Men's Tennis Selection show will be held on Monday, April 28 at 5pm, where the Bulls will await their next opponent.
