HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The University at Buffalo softball team (2-14, 0-0 MAC) started the Marshall March Madness Tournament on Friday afternoon. The Bulls couldn't pull away with a win against either Valparaiso or Marshall, but fought to the end as they lost by a run in both games.
GAME 1 VS. VALPARAISO
In the first game of the Marshall March Madness, the Bulls fell to the Valparaiso Beacons, 2-1. The Beacons got on the board in the top of the first with an RBI single to center. The game remained 1-0 headed into the fourth inning, but Valparaiso struck again, this time on an RBIS double to make it 2-0.
The Bulls managed to hold the game at 2-0 and scored their first run of the game in the bottom of the seventh on a Mia Mitchell RBI double scoring Reagan Terwilliger. That's all the Bulls put together as the Beacons took the win.
Genevieve Longsdorf tossed three shutout innings in relief with a career-high 6 strikeouts.
GAME 2 AT MARSHALL
The Bulls faced the Thundering Herd in their second game of the day. The Bulls took the early 1-0 lead in the top of the first as Abbey Nagel hit a single down the left field line to score Emily Gorman. Marshall responded in the bottom half of the inning as they scored a pair of runs. With runners in scoring position, they scored their first run on a fielder's choice to second base. A single to left gave Marshall a 2-1 lead after the first.
The Thundering Herd added to their lead in the third inning on a solo home run to make it 3-1. Buffalo cut the deficit in half as freshman Isabella Smithson ripped a double to right field to score Nagel.
The score remained 3-2, but the Bulls threatened to tie the game in the top of the seventh. With runners on the corners and 2 outs, the Bulls' leader in on base percentage was up to the plate in Lily Lauck. She battled a 10-pitch at bat, but struck out to end the game.
The Bulls are back in action tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. against Loyola-Chicago followed by Marshall at 6:30 p.m.
