CLEVELAND, Ohio – The University at Buffalo men's tennis team concluded non-conference action with a hard-fought 4-3 victory over defending Horizon League champion Cleveland State at the Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion on Sunday afternoon to complete the weekend sweep.
The Bulls started strong, taking the doubles point as Cheng Tang and Daniils Snaiders won 6-3 at second doubles and Michael Malkin and Yu-Shiang Huang picked up a 6-4 victory at the first position.
Tang added to the Buffalo lead with a 6-3, 6-3 win at second singles but the hosts responded with wins at third, fourth and fifth singles to take a 3-2 lead in the match. Junior Faiz Nasyam overcame a dropped first set to win 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 to even the match at three before fellow junior Theodoros Mitsakos clinched the match for UB with a three-set thriller of his own 4-6, 6-0, 6-4 at first singles.
"This has been an awesome preseason leading up to MAC play," said Lee Nickell. "The amount we have improved over the last two months makes the coaching staff so proud. This weekend was a testament to the work out team has put in on court and in the weight room. Both DePaul and Cleveland State competed hard and I am pleased with our response."
Up next, Buffalo will open Mid-American Conference play on Friday, March 7 at Western Michigan.
