ABILENE, TEXAS – The University at Buffalo women's basketball team fell to Abilene Christian 72-48 in the final game of the ACU Christmas Classic on Saturday afternoon at Moody Coliseum.
Graduate student guard Gabby McDuffie led the Bulls offensively, recording a UB career-high with 15 points and freshman Ella Corry also scored in double figures with 11 points, both shooting an efficient 5-of-7 from the floor. Junior guard Paula Lopez added eight points and sophomore Amber Howard led UB with a career-best eight rebounds.
After finding themselves in a big deficit at the end of the first, Aniya Rowe and Howard chipped in a pair of buckets each in the second quarter, but the Bulls trailed 44-17 at the half.
Corry gave the Bulls a spark early in the third quarter as she came up with a steal and scored on the ensuing fastbreak layup before slicing to the rim for a tough bucket off glass. Later, McDuffie knocked down a corner triple and Corry went to work again, putting her defender in the spin cycle before finishing with a floater off glass, but the hosts answered with a pair of threes to end their scoring drought and take a 54-29 lead at the end of the third.
Buffalo got things going from deep in the fourth quarter as Lopez knocked down a triple on the wing before Corry drained a corner three in from of the UB bench. Lopez cashed in on her second three of the quarter off an offensive rebound by Howard and then McDuffie turned defense into offense, converting on back-to-back steal and scores.
The Wildcats won the battle on the glass, including 16 second chance points, and forced the Bulls into 30 turnovers which they converted into 20 points while adding 20 fastbreak points. Buffalo scored 26 points in the paint on the afternoon while recording 14 steals which they turned into 17 points off turnovers.
Up next, Buffalo will enjoy a break for the holidays before opening Mid-American Conference Play on Wednesday, December 31 at Toledo.
