ST. BONAVENTURE, NY – The University at Buffalo women's basketball team fought to the end but the rally fell short in a 64-57 loss to St. Bonaventure at the Reilly Center on Wednesday night.
Junior guard Paula Lopez led the Bulls in scoring for the fourth straight gam with 13 points to go with four rebounds and five assists. Freshman guard Deana Thompson scored a career-high 11 points and senior guard Anaya Coleman just missed out on double figures with eight points.
The Bulls were in attack mode as they scored six of their first eight points of the game off driving layups, but the Bonnies answered with a triple at the other end to take a one-point lead at the media timeout. Lopez converted on a steal and score to put UB back on top, but the Bonnies answered with a 10-0 run to take a 19-10 lead at the end of the first.
Lopez got to the rim for another layup before she found Amber Howard on the block for a layup to trim the lead to seven early in the second but the UB offense stalled once again as they were held without a field goal for five minutes before Liza Field drained a three from the top of the key and Ella Corry found Thompson for a fastbreak bucket to cut the lead to nine, but the hosts got to the free throw line in the closing minute to maintain a 12-point lead at the half.
Lopez knocked down a jumper in the lane before Thompson sliced to the basket for a tough layup through contact, but the hosts answered with a 7-0 to take their largest lead of the game, 40-23. Thompson hit a three on the wing to end the UB scoring drought and then the Bulls went back into attack mode as Coleman, Lopez and Thompson all got to the rim for layups before Aniya Rowe hit Meg Lucas with a beautiful pass for a bucket to beat the buzzer and cap a 10-0 UB run to cut the lead to six at the end of the third.
Coleman drained a corner triple on UB's first possession of the fourth quarter to make it a one-possession game, but the Bonnies answered with a 10-0 run to go back up by double digits at the six-minute mark. Coleman responded with her second triple of the quarter to trim the lead to seven at the final media timeout. Gabby McDuffie locked down her defender and converted on the steal and score before Rowe got a turnaround jumper to drop in traffic to pull UB within three at the 2:53 mark. Buffalo then got to the free throw line as Lopez, McDuffie and Rowe all converted at the charity stripe to tie the game at 55 with 1:54 remaining but the Bonnies answered with a tough bucket at the other end and the hosts were able to seal the game at the line in the final minute.
Buffalo scored 30 points in the paint and used 12 steals to record 20 points off Bonnies' turnovers while adding 12 fastbreak points, but the hosts held a plus-10 advantage on the glass, including 11 offensive rebounds which they turned into 14 second chance points.
Up next, Buffalo will have a week off before heading to San Juan for the Puerto Rico Classico on November 27-29 where they will face off against Longwood and Hampton.
